Two of the hottest selling gadgets ( the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy SIII) are compared side by side.  Let's take a closer look at some specifications.

On Form Factor

Apple did not change much on the iPhone's familiar look. If you would try it a couple of days, the taller, skinnier and much lighter iPhone 5 will surely change the way you look at the 'unsurpassed' iPhone 4/4S and would make it seem flabby. Downside is the aluminium scuffs easily.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII's plastic case makes it slimmer than it looks. Your fingers may have to do some stretching around this handset. You get quite a bonus with the removable back with access to the battery and a microSD although it’s not much to look at when the screen is not turned on.

Features
Siri is light years ahead of S Voice, still there's nothing truly revolutionary on the iPhone. No NFC, no wireless charging and no extra ports. But the Passbook has a lot of potential and the range of accessories adds up to its versatility

Watching Popup Play videos over games or a browser earns a thumbs up from gadget geeks and won't fluster the S III, and so does the Smart Stay's eye tracking. Sending photos and files over NFC is erratic but seems futuristic.

The Screen
The iPhone 5 has gone big, but if it went bigger than 4in, it would cumbersome. One-handed operation is still comfortable, movies appear smashing on the 16:9 display and it's still one of the sharpest smartphone screens in the market.

Samsung went all out on the S Ill’s big, vibrant 4.8in Super AMOLED display. One drawbak here is that text looks slightly jagged but photos and movies are truly eye-popping, yet the colors can become over-saturated.

Cameras
The iPhone 5’s main 8MP camera will not replace your compact camera since there's no optical zoom or image stabilisation. Though it is excellent for point, shoot and sharing images. The 1080p video never fails to impress.

The S Ill's 8MP camera is too nimble that you might not even realise you've taken a photo. But, what gets your attention is that you can also take snaps while filming full HD vids. The level of detail and color reproduction is at par with the best Android camerass, still it comes short of the iPhone.

Operating System
Everything in iOS 6 works considerably well: email, Facebook integration, iCIoud syncing and the App Store also remains unequalled. The Maps is one obvious exception. This disaster overshadows all that, and the OS badly needs some re-designing.

More inviting than the iPhone's rows of static icons, the Ice Cream Sandwich widgets takes the vote. The ripple effect on the lockscreen is mesmerizing. The TouchWiz is now less intrusive than earlier version. The app choices lets it down though, but it does have Google Maps
